Just One Thing Per Moment

I am so FULL at this moment. Just this one, right now. Outside, inches of white snow blanket my yard. Inside, the air is warm and aromatic with crockpot soup. My sweatshirt is damp after a clump of wet snow slid from a tree branch onto my head and down my back. Brrrr, but boy did I laugh! I am alone, blissfully alone, in the house today. 'Tis the season and there's lots I could do ... lots.

But what I most want to do is bask in a succession of quiet moments.

To simply enjoy this moment, feeling my breath, sitting, listening to the "Skating" track on A Charlie Brown Christmas. Sharing the overwhelming simplicity of my gratitude through typing on this keyboard.

So many shoulds this time of year. Self-induced pressure and expectations abound. And then there are these beautiful moments of pure nothingness, moments of pure rest (note: rest and collapse are two entirely different things!), which are some of the best, most vivid moments of our lives.

Peace and blessings to you.

  • Light candles. Unplug the phone after 6pm. Practice saying no. Take a walk alone. Limit your news intake. Pray. Swing on a swingset! Listen to mellow music. Meditate. Take a mini-retreat. Watch PBS. Color in a coloring book. Mimic your cat. Read brainfluff novels. Read Rumi. Read in a library. Read in a cafĂ©. Read in bed. Ask for help. Nap in a sunbeam. Snuggle. Soak your feet. Doodle. Indulge in guilty pleasure TV. Get a massage. Stroll through a garden you don't have to weed. Make love. Burn your shoulds. Lower your standards. Accept help. Write a gratitude list. Breathe.
